In all of my Cultural Fabric immigrant community work, what I’ve found to be one of the most impressive and pervasive characteristic of Philly’s immigrants is their work ethic. This oftentimes goes with an equally impressive (and pervasive) professional and entrepreneurial drive.
This was on full display last week when I photographed Alex Luong, a pharmacist who came to this country recently with very little but who has now achieved great professional and business success.
His pharmacy at 8th and Washington Avenue is new, bright, and busy. And he is planning to add other health care services to the location to increase the support services for his customers.
Many (most?) of these customers are Asians from the surrounding neighborhood, along with many other Philadelphian’s who need pharmacy services.
Here’s some shots of Mr. Luong and his employees busily serving customers, but taking just a little time to let me see inside this important side of the Vietnamese community in Philadelphia.
