I would like to give a shout-out for one of the best immigrant support agencies that I’ve gotten to know in my long Immigrant Community photo book project…..the Starfinder Foundation. They are in Manayunk and they have a full-sized indoor soccer field, right on Main St…..east end.
Their mission is to help under-served kids succeed…..through soccer. They have after school soccer, weekend soccer and events and tournaments. And all that is nice.
But their real success in in their mentoring and instilling confidence and leadership skills in kids that don’t get a lot of that at home or school.
I’ve seen it with my own eyes and it works. Please think about them as one of the best immigrant support organizations around, which they are.
Here I shot at a Multicultural event where there was, I think, over a dozen immigrant communities represented. And listen to this. The kids were asked to bring a dish from their culture to the event. So other kids (and yours truly) could get to taste a dozen different cuisines…..at one time in one place.
Oh yes, and there was also soccer.
